Case study city of Reutlingen

In 2008, the city of Reutlingen has had a new network infrastructure installed. App. 4800 data ports are operated in more than 17 network wiring closets in three buildings.

The IT Managers of the city of Reutlingen decided to install an additional automated Patch Cable Management System (PMS) in 2008. The goal was to simplify the administration of patch orders and to document switched or cancelled patch connections in real-time in the case of staff relocations.

The city of Reutlingen decided in favour of the RFID based FUTURE-PATCH® PMS of TKM GmbH, Mönchengladbach.

 

If used correctly, good and intelligent PMS amortize after a short time.

In the FUTURE-PATCH® system, RFID transponders attached to patch cables are read by Panel Control Units. PCUs can be attached to copper panels, FO patch panels or switches directly, even subsequently. Changes in the patch condition are detected and shown over LEDs or displays. Parallely, the patch condition will be transferred to a management console. A mouse click on building, floor or room plans directly navigates you to the panel or switch ports in a rack view. Time-controlled administration of the desired patch connection can be made directly in tables/lists or in rack views. The FUTURE-PATCH® system automatically documents all patch changes in real-time.

A RoI calculation on the basis of the investment needed for the FUTURE-PATCH® system has shown a RoI of app. 13 months.
